Corrective Services is hiring

15 September 2020

The Department of Justice, Corrective Services is looking for the next tranche of prison officers to join the ranks at some of WA's regional prisons.

West Kimberley Regional Prison (WKRP) Superintendent Gemma Barry said they are looking for motivated men and women who can act as mentors and positive role models.

"I am hoping to attract people with a knowledge of the Kimberley area to join WKRP. It's a unique open campus style facility, based on a self-care operating philosophy."

Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison (EGRP), located in Kalgoorlie, is also hiring.

Superintendent John Hedges said they are encouraging women and Aboriginal people in particular to apply for the positions.

Prison officers help to provide structure in the lives of the prisoners they work with every day and receive comprehensive, nationally recognised training in the skills needed to work in custodial facilities.

The Department embraces a diverse workforce which is key in providing the best possible outcomes in regional prison settings.

WKRP Senior Prison Officer 'Jason’'said it's a great job that he would recommend to anyone.

"I’ve been at West Kimberley for a little over a year now, but I’ve worked for Corrective Services for more than 17 years," he said.

"Before I applied I’d never considered becoming a prison officer, I just applied because it's a secure role, but I love it, have done since day one."

'Tom' a Prison Officer at EGRP said he loves that no day is the same and that he works with an enthusiastic team.

"I spent six years working in prisons in South Australia, before the opportunity to move to Kalgoorlie came up. I'm originally from the Goldfields, so taking on this position was a great opportunity for me to move back and help the local people," he said.

For anyone interested in applying for the positions there will be information sessions held in Derby and Kalgoorlie in the coming weeks.
