Banksia Hill detainees full of beans in hospitality training program

16 January 2019

Today is National Corrections Day, with the focus this year on 'working corrections'.

One of the programs showcased during this week was the hospitality training provided by staff to young detainees at Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Detainees are getting valuable on the job training and work skills – including how to make the perfect flat white - at the new Banksia Beans Café.

They had a line of customers at the café’s official opening, with Department of Justice staff, Corrective Services Minister Francis Logan and Commissioner Tony Hassall all there to enjoy a coffee.

Banksia Hill has been providing hospitality training since 2013, with more than 90 detainees earning a qualification, leading to work for some.

Barista training and the chance to work in the café are the latest programs.

"This could potentially provide employment opportunities which will help our young people as they re-enter the community," said Banksia Hill Superintendent Andy Hughes.
