What happens to an escapee?
An escape from prison is considered a criminal offence. Once a prisoner who has escaped is found by the police, they are immediately rearrested. The prisoner will then appear before a magistrate within 24 hours, where the matter of escape and any subsequent charges will be dealt with.
All escapees will be returned to a medium or maximum security facility as directed by the court.
An escape from prison automatically increases the security rating of a prisoner and he or she will not be considered for a minimum security rating for an appropriate period of time.
