Two detainees escaped from Banksia Hill Detention Centre at 10.30 am today.
The Minister for Corrective Services has requested a full investigation into the incident in which the offenders, aged 17 and 18, assaulted a contractor working at the site before stealing his vehicle to facilitate the escape.
The Department offers its full sympathies to the contractor who required medical treatment for an injury sustained during the incident.
Police were immediately notified and have commenced an investigation.
Additional security is being provided by the Department’s Emergency Support Group until current infrastructure is fully assessed and approved fit for purpose.
No further comment will be made while the incident continues to be investigated.
