COMMUNITY members will be able to purchase spectacular and scrumptious bargains for Christmas gifts at this year’s Gala Day at Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women.
The public is invited to attend the Gala Day on Saturday, 7 November from 10.30am to 2.30pm with all proceeds going to charity.
Superintendent Janette Allen said since the annual event began in 2005 more than $38,000 had been raised for charity, including $10,000 last year for Fremantle’s The Sisters’ Place.
“This year the beneficiaries will be Wooree Miya Women’s Refuge, which offers emergency accommodation to women, and Camp Breakaway, an organisation that holds camps for children whose parents are in prison as well as for the children’s carers,” she said.
Boronia offers meaningful rehabilitative activities and work placements to minimum-security female prisoners. While preparing them for reintegration into the community, the centre addresses the unique needs of women prisoners and provides them with practical skills.
Community and volunteer work allows the women to undertake meaningful rehabilitation, develop new skills and build self-esteem.
This year the Rowethorpe Knitting Club has supported the Boronia Gala Day by knitting items to be sold such as beanies, toys, scarves and socks. There will also be raffles, plenty of food and a wide range of plants and vegetables for sale.
Ms Allen said the prisoners had been busy working all year to make gorgeous jewellery, fine-crafted wooden items, quality cards and innovative handmade gifts for purchase on the day.
”The women take great pride in seeing others enjoy what they have made and they are eagerly looking forward to Gala Day,” she said.
Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women is at 14 Hayman Road, Bentley. There is plenty of free parking available at Curtin University in car parks 23 and 25 opposite the Centre.
