Visitors are most welcome in all Western Australian prisons. They are an important link between the prisoner and the life they will re-join in the community.
At Western Australian metropolitan prisons, there is additional support for visitors from the family support centres. These centres are operated by independent non-profit organisations that are contracted by the Department to provide services to visitors. Before visiting a prisoner at a prison with a family support centre, you must first check in at the centre.
Visiting hours at Western Australian's prisons vary. At most prisons, you will need to call and make an appointment for your visit up to 24 hours ahead.
Visitors to prisons should be aware that:
- on arrival at the prison, they will be asked to sign a declaration outlining their identity and correct address, their friendship or relationship with the prisoner and the purpose of their visit;
- anyone, including children and babies, may be searched before being granted entry to the prison. There are four kinds of searches - visual; electronic scanning or detecting; rub-down search or strip search;
- drug detector dogs operate in prisons;
- video cameras operate in all prisons and you will be filmed during your visit;
- any person caught trying to bring a banned substance or item into a prison may be charged and may be refused entry on future visits to the prison.
