Violent and Addictions Offending, Cognitive Skills Programs

Violent offending

Violent offending includes a range of offences such as homicide, serious assault and robbery. Crime and correctional statistics on violent offending can be found on the Crime Research Centre website.

Addictions offending

Most offenders have problems with substance use, and for at least half, substance use is found to be a factor in their current offending. Addictions programs attempt to reduce problematic substance use both as an end in itself and in order to reduce associated offending.

Cognitive skills programs

These programs address a range of basic thinking skills that are implicated in criminal behaviour. Overseas research has generally found that offenders who attend cognitive skills programs are less likely to re-offend.
