Smoking Reduction Strategy

Downloads are available below

The Department of Corrective Services is on track to meet its 30 June deadline to reduce smoking within the State’s prisons.

All WA prisons, including cells and units, will be smoke-free.  The Department is creating designated smoking areas in prisons and eliminating the practice of smoking in enclosed areas.

The Department has been working towards the reduction strategy since the introduction of a Smoking Cessation Plan in 2005.

The plan brings the Department in line with occupational health and safety legislation to ensure smoke-free workplaces for staff and a clean air environment for prisoners.

With the State’s prison population at an all time high, the Department has determined a complete cessation of smoking can not be considered at this time. The current prevalence of smoking among prisoners exceeds 85% compared with 15% in the general community.

Prisoners and staff at all WA prisons have access to nicotine replacement therapy, and prisoners also have access to a range of resources such as intervention counselling, the Quitline and the Quit Fresh Start Program.

All visitors to WA prisons must adhere to the local guidelines set down at each prison.
