Health promotion and illness prevention are an important role of the Department's health professionals.

Offenders are encouraged to take an active role in maintaining their health and fitness, including the prevention and management of conditions such as diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease.

Health professionals provide prisoners with information promoting health and well-being and provide counselling as required. This may be provided to offenders on an individual basis or as part of a group program such as the blood borne virus/harm minimisation program delivered to offenders on entry.

All prisons in Western Australia include a medical centre/nursing post where prisoners can receive medical attention. Prisoners requiring hospital treatment are treated in the public hospital system.

Casuarina Prison - the State's biggest metropolitan prison - also contains a fully equipped infirmary where prisoners can be transferred for less serious illnesses and after discharge from a hospital when ongoing medical care is needed.

The Department works closely with the Health department of WA in providing holistic care at a community standard.
