Prison support officers are located in every prison in the State.
They are paid employees who manage a team of peer support prisoners who provide support to new arrivals and any other prisoner who is having difficulties.
Prison support officers work closely with, and take direct referrals from, prison officers, nursing staff and the Prison Counselling Service. They also refer prisoners to other service providers.
Prison support officers are Aboriginal staff who work with all prisoners who have a broad range of problems. Their peer support team of prisoners reflects the population of the prison and provides culturally appropriate advice to staff.
The peer support program is a suicide-prevention strategy.
Prison support officers are part of the Prisoner At-Risk Management Group which manages all prisoners at risk of suicide.
