The special needs of prisoners with intellectual disabilities are handled by the Department's Disability Services unit, which adapts programs and services for offenders with intellectual disabilities.
In addition to input into policy and standards, much of the work involves modifying existing services to suit the particular requirements of individual offenders. Special programs are run for sex offenders and those needing to develop their cognitive skills.
Close liaison with the Disability Services Commission is maintained to assist in planning and managing these programs. The service also has accesses to limited accommodated for prisoners with disabilities who need housing when they are released.
