Pardelup

Host Prison: Karnet Prison Farm

The Pardelup work camp, based in the Shire of Plantagenet, was established following successful community consultation in June 2002.

The camp is situated on a large farm complex near Mt Barker, 386 kilometres south-west of Perth.

The work camp consists of approximately 12 minimum-security prisoners. It is hoped eventually up to 20 prisoners will be involved, including a group employed to work on the farm and extensive grounds.

The work program of the camp is coordinated through a local community consultative committee, which includes a councillor, tourism operator and local business people, among others. The committee helps the Department prioritise work projects and encourages individuals and community organisations to develop more projects for the prisoners.

While Pardelup is the State's newest work camp, the following projects have already been undertaken:

  • construction of ablutions at Twin Creeks
  • maintenance of walk trails at Porongurup National Park
  • general maintenance and painting at the Mt Barker Police Station Museum
  • construction, landscaping and maintenance at the Mt Barker Primary School and Turf Club.

Other proposed projects include:

  • ongoing maintenance of the Bibbulmun Track and other projects in national parks managed by the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM)
  • maintaining local sporting complexes and grounds
  • helping the local speedway group establish a new racetrack facility
  • building walk trails at the old Government dam site
  • helping to eradicate noxious weeds in Mt Barker
  • assisting the Kendenup Bushland Management Group.

The local community of Mt Barker has embraced the work camp program, recognising the value of prisoners developing practical work skills while making a positive contribution to the community. The excellent working relationship is reflected in prisoners being able to use the local gym and swimming pool free-of-charge in appreciation for the work performed.
