Prisoner Health and Care

Health services are provided to prisoners at each prison by doctors, nurses, dentists, psychologists/clinical psychologists and social workers employed by the Department, and by medical practitioners and others working under contract. Where necessary, arrangements are made for prisoners to obtain treatment in the public health system.

Health Services aims to maintain the physical and psychological well-being of prisoners by providing a comprehensive range of health care services, at a standard that is comparable with that available to the general community.

Health Services provides prisoner support to assist prisoners as they enter custody, and education and health awareness programs to encourage prisoners to improve their health skills.
