Millstream

Host prison: Roebourne Regional Prison

The Millstream Work Camp, located in the Millstream-Chichester National Park and sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM), has been operational since January 2000.

The Department has worked closely with the traditional owners of the land, the Ngarlooma and Injibarndi people, to create this opportunity for Aboriginal prisoners – for many it's not only the chance to develop valuable skills, but an opportunity to return to their traditional lands.

The prisoners have had the opportunity to be involved in a range of cultural, heritage, recreational and environmental projects. Recently they have completed:

  • preparation and setting up of new camp site
  • revegetation of old camp site and roads
  • landscaping of camel/walk trail.

As well as employment skills, prisoners at work in the Millstream-Chichester National Park in Western Australia's Pilbara region have welcomed the opportunity to add 'cultural awareness' to their list of programs.

Aboriginal elders regularly visit the prisoner work camp, which is nearby the historic Millstream homestead.
