Managing Drugs in Prison

Downloads are available below

The Department provides a range of initiatives to reduce the supply of, demand for and harms caused from drug use in prison.

All strategies complement each other and no one measure stands alone in the Department’s response to drug use.

Strategies include:

  • drug detection dogs;
  • drug free units;
  • a pharmacotherapy program;
  • drug testing; and
  • intensive programs for high-risk repeat offenders.

The Drug and Alcohol Action Plan 2005-2009 focuses on continuing the successful implementation of strategies introduced through the Justice Drug Plan in 2003. It focuses on alcohol use, Aboriginal alcohol use and the use of volatile substances.
