Juvenile Offenders in the Community

The Department manages about 1900 juvenile offenders in the community at any one time, of whom about 900 are in preventative or pre-court diversionary programs and the remainder under supervision orders in the community.

Juveniles who are “at risk” of offending or who have just started offending, may be assisted through the Killara Youth Support Services.

Juveniles who have committed minor offences can be referred by the Police or the Children’s Court to the Juvenile Justice Team.  This results in the matter being dealt with outside of the court process.

Those who have gone to court and received community supervision orders or supervised release from detention are supported by the Department’s Juvenile Justice Officers. Juveniles on community based orders may be required to complete community work, as well as to participate in vocational, education or rehabilitation programs.

Youth Support Officers are also available to act as positive role models and provide mentor support to young people in the justice system.
