Further Information
If you are thinking about making a positive career and lifestyle move, the Department of Corrective Services (DCS) could be for you.
Applying for jobs from outside Australia
People from outside Australia can apply for advertised jobs with the Department of Corrective Services (DCS). Until recently only Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia could be offered a permanent position, however recent changes to Western Australian public service employment guidelines mean New Zealand citizens can now also be offered a permanent appointment.
People who do not meet these criteria can still apply and be considered for jobs with the Department, if those jobs can be offered as fixed term contracts. People from outside Australia thinking about applying for an advertised position should phone or email the Department contact listed on the job advertisement to ask if a fixed term contract is possible.
To enter Australia and start work, successful international applicants (except NZ citizens) need to obtain sponsorship from DCS and be granted a Temporary Business (Long Stay) – standard business sponsorship (Subclass 457) visa.
In order to be considered for sponsorship by DCS, candidates must:
- be trained in one of the occupational groups listed below
- have the relevant skills (including English language skills), qualifications and experience specified in the job description
- have a minimum of three years full-time experience in the role and have been employed in the role within the past two years
- meet mandatory licensing, registration or professional membership requirements (if applicable)
- meet health and character requirements (both the employee and family)
- be prepared to work for DCS for between three months and four years (contract length will vary between positions) and
- have a valid offer of employment / contract from DCS.
People sponsored on temporary long stay visas are able to:
- bring people (eg family, partner) with them to Australia as long as they qualify as ‘secondary applicants’ under the terms of the visa – secondary applicants can work and study in Australia
- apply for permanent residency once in Australia and
- travel in and out of Australia an unlimited number of times while the temporary long stay visa is current.
