History
Greenough Prison was designed and built as a minimum-security prison in 1984, replacing the Geraldton Prison.
The prison was upgraded in 1990 to a medium-security prison. A medium-security perimeter was built and close-circuit television surveillance was installed. A further upgrade was completed in 1996, and in 1999 a 36-bed minimum security facility was opened.
Day-to-day operations
The prison offers a variety of educational, vocational and offending behaviour education programs and opportunities. These include:
- an education centre, which offers a range of courses from basic literacy and numeracy through to TAFE, tertiary or specialist computer courses.
- a carpentry shop, used for carpentry instruction by a TAFE tutor.
- a metal shop through which the prison maintains ongoing partnerships with external agencies for metal fabrication.
- a prison laundry which processes about 10,000kg of laundry a week.
- 20 hectares of prison grounds maintained by prisoners, including a vegetable garden, orchard and sports oval.
- a prison kitchen producing about 5000 meals a week, supervised by a chef instructor. Prisoners working in the kitchen complete a food safety course.
- a maintenance shop employing prisoners to help maintain the prison under the supervision of a prison officer.
- work parties, provided on a daily basis to the surrounding shires, as requested. The shires of Greenough, Chapman Valley, Irwin and Northampton and the City of Geraldton have benefited from the prison’s community work projects.
The prison provides nursing staff, and an on-call service is available from the regional hospital and the Aboriginal Medical Service. Doctors visit the prison three days a week.
The prison provides a range of programs to address offending behaviour of prisoners. These programs include sex-offender treatment, drug and alcohol programs, domestic violence programs and cognitive skills.
The prison has a psychologist on duty each working day. Prisoners conduct a peer support group with the assistance of a prison support officer.
