In WA prisons, all prisoners serving sentences of six months or more undergo literacy screening. The Education and Vocational Training Unit manages programs aimed at securing employment for offenders upon release.
These programs are available Statewide through internal and external service providers, including TAFE and other colleges. Offenders are encouraged to participate in a wide range of educational and vocational training programs whilst in custody.
Courses in prison are accredited by TAFE and recognised as industry standard. This means that qualifications and certificates earned will be recognised anywhere - increasing job prospects. Courses started in prison can be continued on the outside.
Prisoners can study the following courses on a full-time or part-time basis:
- adult basic education;
- vocational (job) education and training;
- secondary and higher education;
- pre-release programs; and
- driver education and training.
