Broome Regional Prison upgrade

An $11.2 million project to improve facilities at the 66-bed Broome Regional Prison is now in progress, and is expected to be completed by April 2008.

The prison works program aims to improve conditions for prisoners and ensure safer working conditions for staff.

The works program includes:

  • upgrade to the male maximum security unit, including relocation of health services to a new multi-purpose facility, and an activity and visits area
  • improvements to the women’s accommodation unit, including mother/child facilities, and a women’s activities and program area
  • new perimeter fence
  • new education and programs facilities
  • new health centre
  • new staff ablutions.

When the new West Kimberley prison in Derby is completed the Broome prison is expected to become a remand facility, to service Broome courts.
