The Department is building new facilities at Bandyup Women’s Prison including self-care units for prisoners and a new main entrance building.
Why is the redevelopment happening?
The works will allow the Department to provide better services to meet the needs of staff, prisoners and visitors.
What does it include?
Construction works include:
- a new main entrance building
- 40 self-care beds - including eight for prisoners with babies living with them at the prison
- an extension of the perimeter fence to incorporate the new buildings
- improvements to the car park, including additional car bays.
When will it start?
Construction began in January 2007, and is scheduled to finish by May 2008.
Will security at the prison be affected by the construction?
Safety and security at Bandyup will be maintained throughout the works, and remains a critical priority for the prison. When completed, the new facilities will create a safer and more visually appropriate environment.
Where will I park during the redevelopment?
Parking arrangements are likely to stay the same as they are now. Any changes will be clearly signposted.
Where will I enter the prison?
The current entrance on Middle Swan Road will remain in use until the new entrance buildings are completed and become operational.
Will visits to the prison be affected?
No. The routine at Bandyup will continue as normal during construction. Prisoners’ schedules will not change during the redevelopment.
Will the redevelopment be noisy?
The Department anticipates minimal impact to the immediate surrounds. Construction activity will be in line with Government regulations and guidelines.
